ISTANBUL (AA) – Germany has ordered temporary border controls for another six months, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced Wednesday.
“We remain resolute in the fight against irregular migration,” the chancellor said on X.
He stated that there have been 47,000 rejections and 1,900 arrests of smugglers at the borders, while asylum applications have decreased by one-third in one year.
“With the border controls, we are effectively pushing back irregular migration,” he added.
Border control was launched in October 2023 within the scope of combating irregular migration in Germany.
Since then, asylum applications decreased by 111,000 and irregular migration decreased by 34%, while the number of people deported during this period increased by 22%, according to the Interior Ministry.
