ISTANBUL (AA) - Germany maintained its second-place position globally in electric vehicle production last year, reaching record levels and surpassing the US, according to a report by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) released on Wednesday.

Last year, electric vehicle production in Germany rose 23% from 2024 to 1.67 million units, the report said.

Production of fully electric battery electric vehicles increased by 15% to 1.22 million units, while plug-in hybrid vehicle production jumped 54% to 450,000 units.

Germany surpassed the US, which produced 1.04 million electric vehicles, maintaining its position as the world’s second-largest electric vehicle producer. China topped the global list with production of 16.1 million units.

The VDA expects Germany’s domestic electric vehicle production to increase by 6% this year to 1.76 million units.

Meanwhile, total car production in Germany increased by 2% last year to 4.15 million units. The share of electric vehicles in total car production reached an all-time high of 40%.

“Domestic production of electric cars is at a record level, which clearly demonstrates that the German automotive industry is forging ahead with e-mobility and climate-neutral mobility,” VDA President Hildegard Mueller said.

“Now it is crucial that policymakers further improve framework conditions so that measures such as new e-mobility subsidies do not become short-lived successes.

“In particular, we need more charging options for electric cars and commercial vehicles, a consistent expansion of the electricity grid, cheaper charging electricity, and improved access to raw materials critical to the transformation,” Mueller added.
