ATHENS (AA) – Greece granted citizenship to a criminal wanted by Türkiye.

The decision granting citizenship to Yasam Ayavefe, which was signed by Interior Minister Mavroudis Voridis and President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, appeared in the Greek Official Gazette on June 22.

It was argued that Ayavefe rendered profound services for Greece, donating medical and food supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ayavefe is wanted by Türkiye with a red notice for forming and managing illegal gambling and betting websites.

He was arrested by Greek police in February 2019.

Turkish Justice Ministry had demanded his return to Türkiye.
