ATHENS (AA) - The Athens prosecutor’s office ordered an investigation over an Adidas sneaker-shaped drone light show above the Acropolis -- among the world’s best-known archaeological sites, media reports said Friday.

Earlier, the Culture Ministry also announced it had initiated a legal complaint targeting all responsible parties for potential violations of archaeological protection laws, the Kathimerini newspaper said, adding that the development came after videos circulated on social media appeared to show drones forming the Adidas logo and a sports shoe above the ancient Acropolis.

In response, Adidas argued that the event was undertaken after receiving and complying with all required permits.

“The flight of the drones took place strictly over the Zappeion Megaron site, in compliance with the permits received, and no image of the Acropolis monument was used by Adidas for advertising or other purposes,” it said.

Meanwhile, opposition parties PASOK and SYRIZA accused the conservative government of commodification of the country's cultural values because of the incident.
