KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) - Guinea-Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embalo sacked the country’s prime minister Thursday and appointed a successor ahead of a general election scheduled for November, according to a presidential decree.
The firing of Rui Duarte de Barros and appointment of Braima Camara effectively reshuffled the Cabinet three months ahead of legislative and presidential elections on Nov. 23.
Camara replaced de Barros as the new head of the Cabinet, which is expected to be announced in the coming days.
Camara formerly worked as a coordinator of the opposition Madem G15 party.
He is the third prime minister in the West African nation since Embalo assumed power in 2020.
Embalo and Camara were allies within the Madem G15 party following a split in the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).
In March, Embalo announced that he would seek a second term in the November elections.
