TRIPOLI, Libya (AA) - An as-yet-undetermined number of people were injured Wednesday during an armed attack on the headquarters of Libya’s electoral commission in capital Tripoli, according to an official source.
The source, speaking to Anadolu Agency anonymously due to restrictions on talking to media, said a group of gunmen had attacked the commission’s headquarters in Tripoli’s Ghut Shaal district.
Several people had been injured in the assault, the source said, going on to suggest the attack had been perpetrated by the Daesh terrorist group, which is known to maintain a presence in lawless Libya.
Libya’s Al-Ahrar television channel, meanwhile, quoted a local security source as saying that the assailants had snuck into the commission’s main office before staging the attack.
According to the broadcaster, Libyan security forces have surrounded the building, in which the perpetrators remain holed up.
