MEXICO CITY (AA) - Honduran journalist organizations condemned the increasingly threatening behavior of the military toward independent journalists and media outlets, warning Tuesday that members of the press are being targeted by the armed forces.
The statement follows a recent issue of FF.AA. Digital, the official publication of the Honduran Armed Forces, which featured a front-page article titled “Hitmen of the Truth” accompanied by photos of three renowned journalists.
The article accused Juan Carlos Sierra, Dagoberto Rodriguez and Rodrigo Wong Arevalo of being enemies of the state, without presenting any supporting evidence.
The Honduran Media Association (AMC) denounced the recent publication as an escalation of threats by the armed forces and warned that Honduran journalists are in danger of being targeted by the military.
“The Honduran Media Association (AMC), in light of the escalation of threats led by the armed forces and the Ministry of Defense, regrets that it is precisely these two institutions -- who wield power delegated by the Honduran people -- that have risen up against freedom of expression, putting at risk through their actions the lives of respected members of the media who practice independent journalism," said the statement.
In addition, the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) called the article a “serious attack on press freedom and an unacceptable attempt to intimidate critical journalism.”
The Honduran College of Journalists said the attacks come from the “highest echelons” of military power and the government.
According to the Honduran National Commission of Human Rights (Conadeh), 101 journalists were killed between 2001 and 2025, with 88% of the cases left in impunity. From 2022 to 2025, 11 members of the press were killed, and in only one case were the culprits convicted.
