ICC approves investigations on war crimes in Afghanistan

Decision overturns earlier rejection of request to examine alleged crimes of US soldiers, Taliban, Afghan troops

KABUL, Afghanistan (AA) - In a long overdue ruling, the International Criminal Court on Thursday ruled that prosecutors can open an official inquiry into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Afghanistan by the U.S. troops, government forces and Taliban militants.

The court delivered its judgment in the Prosecutor’s appeal against a decision of Pre-Trial Chamber II which had rejected in April last year the request to investigate alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the war-ravaged country.
