JAKARTA, Indonesia (AA) – Indonesia’s military on Sunday confirmed that the wreckage of a missing submarine was found with all 53 crew inside dead.
Addressing a news conference in Bali, Indonesian military chief Hadi Tjahjanto said that an image that has been confirmed to be a part of the sunken vessel contains anchors and other parts of the ship including the safety clothes for the crew.
Based on authentic evidence, he said, “it can be stated that the KRI Nanggala-402 has drowned and all of its crew have died.”
The Indonesian submarine went missing with its crew during an exercise on Wednesday.
KRI Nanggala-402 was built in Germany in 1977 and entered service with the Indonesian Navy in 1981.
