Inter Milan beat Roma 3-1 to retake Italian Serie A lead

Inter have 72 points, city rivals AC Milan in second spot with 71

ANKARA (AA) - Inter Milan became the Italian top-flight Serie A leaders after beating Roma 3-1 in a Saturday league match in Milan.

Dutch right midfielder Denzel Dumfries scored on a quick counterattack in minute 30 to give a 1-0 lead to Inter at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.

Playing in the center of the park, Croatia's Marcelo Brozovic scored a solo-effort goal in the box as Inter doubled the lead in the 40th minute.

Inter's Argentine star Lautaro Martinez scored a header from a corner kick in the 52nd minute.

Turkish midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu played the entire match and had two assists for Inter.

In minute 85, Roma's Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan fired a right-footed shot to the top corner that beat Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic. But it was nothing more than a consolation goal.

The Italian league have seen fierce competition between Inter and AC Milan for the 2022 title.

Following the home win, Inter have 72 points in 33 matches to top Serie A.

City rivals AC Milan are in the second spot with 71 points.

Third-place Napoli have 67 points.

Meanwhile, Roma, are in the fifth position with 58 points.
