TEHRAN, Iran/ISTANBUL (AA) - Iranian security forces killed six foreign gunmen during a security operation in the southeast, media reports said Saturday.
State television said security forces attacked the group of men with foreign nationalities in Sistan-Baluchestan province after they crossed the border into Iran, killing six and arresting two others.
It said the gunmen had plotted to attack a vital facility in the country, without providing details or specifying the nationalities of the gunmen.
Security forces seized American-made M4 and M16 rifles equipped with laser sights, along with grenades and explosive vests.
Two intelligence officers and a policeman were injured during the operation, said the broadcaster.
State television reported Friday that five police officers were killed in an armed attack in Sistan-Baluchestan province.
No group has claimed responsibility for the assault, but the “Jaish al-Adl” (Army of Justice) group has previously claimed attacks on civilian and military targets in the region.
Iran designates Jaish al-Adl as a terror organization.
