Israel arrests Palestinian over West Bank shooting

Israeli authorities accuse Barghouthi of killing two soldiers last month

JERUSALEM (AA) – Israeli forces arrested a Palestinian suspected of killing two soldiers near the West Bank city of Ramallah last month, according to Israel’s internal security service Shin Bet on Tuesday.

In a statement, Shin Bet said Asem Barghouthi was arrested in an overnight raid in the village of Abu Shukheidim in northern Ramallah city.

Israeli authorities accuse Barghouthi of killing two soldiers and injuring two others in an attack in the Givat Assaf settlement east of Ramallah.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces rounded up 20 Palestinians in overnight raids carried out across the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli army said the individuals were arrested for “suspected involvement in popular terrorist activities”, without elaborating on the nature of said activities.

The Israeli army frequently carries out sweeping arrest campaigns across the occupied West Bank on the pretext of searching for “wanted” Palestinians.

According to Palestinian figures, more than 6,000 Palestinians continue to languish in Israeli detention facilities, including parliament members, women and minors.
