Jordanian lawyer says trampling of Israeli flag ‘reaction to its killing of innocents, violation of human rights’

JERUSALEM (AA) - Israel protested on Wednesday the trampling of its flag by a Jordanian lawyer in the capital Amman.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry called the incident “an act of incitement that is inconsistent with the spirit of the peace agreement between the countries.”

According to the statement, a formal protest has been lodged with the Jordanian Embassy in Israel over the incident.

The Israeli ministry said it expects the Jordanian government to issue a condemnation and prevent such incidents in the future.

There was no immediate comment from Jordanian authorities on the Israeli statement.

A video showed the deputy head of the Jordanian Bar Association, Walid Al-Adwan, trampling the Israeli flag in front of the bar building in Amman.

Adwan, for his part, defended the act as “an honor on his chest.”

“This flag represents an occupier of a land whose rightful owners are the Palestinians,” he told Anadolu.

He called the trampling of the Israeli flag “a reaction to Israel’s killing of innocents and its violation of human rights and all international laws.”

Jordan is facing mounting US pressure to take in Palestinians after President Donald Trump called for seizing control of Gaza and relocating Palestinians, an idea vehemently rejected by Palestinians and Arab leaders.

While hosting King Abdullah II at the White House, Trump said on Tuesday that he would "take" the Gaza Strip under US authority and redevelop it with hotels, office buildings, and other infrastructure.

Despite Trump's push for Jordan and Egypt to resettle displaced Palestinians, King Abdullah firmly rejected any forced displacement of Gaza’s population. He announced, however, that Jordan would take in 2,000 critically ill children from Gaza for treatment.

The US president’s proposal for Palestinian displacement came amid a ceasefire agreement that took effect in Gaza on Jan. 19, suspending Israel’s genocidal war, which has killed more than 48,200 Palestinians and left the enclave in ruins.
