ISTANBUL (AA) – An Israeli soldier was wounded by sniper fire in northern Gaza, the army said on Monday as Tel Aviv continued its brutal war on the Palestinian enclave.

A military statement said the incident took place on Sunday, leaving the soldier with light injuries. He serves in the 401st Armored Brigade and was evacuated for medical treatment.

Official army figures put Israel’s military losses since the start of the Gaza war at 898 dead and 6,190 wounded. Under tight wartime censorship, Israeli media have accused the army of downplaying the true scale of its casualties to maintain public morale.

Last month, Israeli rights groups B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, citing the systematic destruction of Palestinian society and the deliberate dismantling of the territory’s health care system.

In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
