GENEVA (AA) - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday urged Israel to respect international law in Gaza, where she said the situation is "increasingly dramatic and unjustifiable."
Speaking at the lower house of parliament during a question time, Meloni said: "I have spoken several times with (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu over the past few months."
"These were often difficult conversations, and on each occasion, I stressed the urgent need to find a way to end hostilities and ensure respect for international law and international humanitarian law," she said.
The prime minister said she "repeats this call today," emphasizing: "Because I have no hesitation in saying that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is becoming increasingly dramatic and unjustifiable."
Israel has kept Gaza crossings closed to food, medical, and humanitarian aid since March 2, deepening an already humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
More than 52,900 Palestinians, primarily women and children, have been killed in Gaza during Israel's military offensive since October 2023.
