ATHENS (AA) – Italians’ purchasing power fell more than in half in 2022, by 54%, local media reported on Monday.
Citing a report by the Bologna-based NOMISMA think-tank, the state-run ANSA news agency said that one in four Italians also reported living hand to mouth, having to spend their entire income to make ends meet.
Moreover, 26% of households expressed fear of not getting to the end of the month.
In the last year, the report said, 88% of households adopted penny-pinching measures in the face of the rising cost of living.
However, according to the report, the ability to save has dropped for over half of the households, while around 40% of the savers said they try to put money away because they fear the uncertainty the future may hold.
