LONDON (AA) – The Caribbean nation of Jamaica plans to demand slavery reparations from Queen Elizabeth II over Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, Jamaican Culture Minister Olivia Grange said Tuesday.

Grange said a petition demanding slavery reparations for all citizens of Jamaica from Queen Elizabeth would be presented to the British monarch

"We are especially pleased to announce that we have made further steps in our strides towards seeking reparatory justice for the victims and descendants of the transatlantic slave trade,” she said.

Demand for slavery reparations is also supported by the country’s opposition party, the People’s National Party (PNP).

Jamaica is part of the British Commonwealth and the British monarch is officially titled Queen of Jamaica.
