John Motson, legendary football commentator of video games, dead at 77

Motson famous for work on Electronic Arts' video game series, FIFA Football

ANKARA (AA) - John Motson, the legendary football commentator of video games, has died, British media announced Thursday. He was 77.

"It is with great sadness we announce that John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep today," his family said in a statement.

Motson, who covered World Cup tournaments, UEFA European Championships and FA Cup finals for British channel BBC Sport, was also famous for his work on Electronic Arts' video game series, FIFA Football, in recent years.

"John Motson was the voice of a footballing generation - steering us through the twists and turns of FA Cup runs, the highs and lows of World Cups and, of course, Saturday nights on Match of the Day," said BBC Director-General Tim Davie.

The Football Association (The FA) which regarded Motson as the voice of the FA Cup for generations of football fans, wrote: "We are very sad to hear that John Motson has passed away. An iconic voice in the world of football that will always be remembered, covering an incredible 29 FA Cup Finals. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP Motty.”
