Jordanian king receives Palestine's Abbas in Amman

Meeting comes amid recent uptick in Israeli-Palestinian violence

AMMAN (AA) - King Abdullah II on Tuesday received Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the Jordanian capital.

According to a statement released by Jordan’s Royal Court, the meeting took place at Amman’s Basman Palace.

While the meeting was held behind closed doors, it is believed the two men discussed recent Israeli escalations in the occupied West Bank.

On Saturday, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced his country's decision to officially recognize West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

On the same day, Hussein al-Sheikh, head of the Palestinian Civil Affairs Authority, said Abbas's visit to Jordan was aimed at garnering Arab support for Palestine in the face of continued Israeli aggression.

On Tuesday, the Arab League held an emergency meeting in Cairo to discuss Israel’s latest escalations and the Australian decision regarding Jerusalem.
