ISTANBUL (AA) - Kazakhstan aims to lay a fiber-optic communication line along the bottom of the Caspian Sea toward Azerbaijan, Deputy Prime Minister Zhaslan Madiyev said on Tuesday, local news agency Kazinform reported.
Madiyev said Kazakhstan, strategically located between Europe and Asia, plays a pivotal role in the transit of international internet traffic.
“This project will reinforce Kazakhstan’s position as a digital bridge between East and West and enhance the resilience of international data transmission channels,” he said.
The minister added that construction of the optical cable, which aims to strengthen the country’s transit potential, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
According to AzerTelecom, the project features a 380 km fiber-optic line with the data transmission capacity up to 400 terabits per second, forming a high-speed, low-latency regional connectivity corridor.
Last October, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced that a contract for a “significant infrastructure project” was signed in March 2025 in Baku.
