NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) - Faith Kipyegon of Kenya demolished the women's 1500m world record Friday.

Kipyegon crossed the finish line in 3 minutes and 49.11 seconds at the highly anticipated Florence Diamond League.

Her performance etched her name in the history books as she shattered the previous record.

The reigning Olympic and World 1500m champion was hailed in Kenya after she delivered a true masterclass.

Kipyegon's extraordinary feat breaks an eight-year-old world record that was previously held by Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia, who had set the mark at 3:50.07 in 2015.

The victory holds immense significance for Kipyegon, who is a mother of one.

Her success comes from her remarkable performance at the Doha Diamond League, where she posted the world-leading time earlier this season in her first race of the year.
