DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry expressed Monday the interest to work closely with intelligence agencies of Bangladesh to fight terrorism.

Kerry paid a whirlwind day-long visit Monday to Bangladesh and met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, reported the state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha

"We need to exchange information to combat terrorism,” said Kerry, according to Ihsanul Karim, press secretary of Bangladesh’s prime minister, who briefed the media after the meeting.

Sheikh Hasina said that terrorism was now a global problem, and the government was working to create mass awareness against this menace.

John Kerry’s visit took place at a time when there has been growing security concerns in Dhaka following the July 1 attack at the Gulshan café, in which 20 hostages, including 17 foreigners, were killed.

Bangladesh’s former prime minister and current opposition leader Khaleda Zia also met John Kerry in Dhaka.
