Lake Gala in NW Turkiye partly frozen amid harsh winter

Migratory birds including flamingos struggle to find food in nearby paddy

By Gokhan Balci

EDIRNE, Turkiye (AA) – The surface of Lake Gala in Enez district of northwestern Edirne province of Turkiye is partly covered with ice amid freezing winter conditions affecting the country.

The migratory guests of the lake, namely flamingos as well as geese and swans, struggle to find food in the nearby paddy field as the partly frozen surface of the lake is not penetrable.

The northwestern Turkiye has been affected by the cold weather for the past week due to the cold air mass coming from the Balkans and the Black Sea region.

Daily life has been disrupted by the cold weather, but the temperatures are expected to return to seasonal normals by early February.
