Landslide triggered by rain in Central Java region, rescue operations underway

ISTANBUL (AA) - A landslide triggered by heavy rain on the Indonesian island of Java killed at least 16 people, officials said on Tuesday.

“Sixteen people were found dead after being buried by a landslide in … Pekalongan Regency, Central Java on Monday at 17.30 local time. The landslide buried two houses and dragged several vehicles passing through the area,” National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Abdul Muhari said in a statement.

The search for victims is still being carried out by a joint team considering that three people are still reported missing, the statement said, adding that the landslide also injured 10 people who were immediately referred to a hospital. The disaster also damaged two bridges.

​​​​​​​Muhari said the weather forecast for the next three days showed potential rains that could cause floods, flash floods and landslides.
