GENEVA (AA) - Latvia's foreign minister on Thursday announced he would be running as a candidate in the upcoming presidential election.

"Thanks to my colleagues for being nominated for the post of president, thank you all for the many kind words and short messages!" Edgars Rinkevics from the Jauna Vienotiba (New Unity) party said in a tweet.

Rinkevics added that he hopes for a "good and meaningful" discussion with the other "respectable and strong" applicants on how to build a strong and modern Latvia.

The Baltic country's presidential election is scheduled for May 31.
