Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes Mediterranean Sea off Cyprus

Quake occurs 8.20 miles below surface, says Turkiye’s disaster management agency

ANKARA (AA) - A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck in the Mediterranean Sea off the southwest coast of Cyprus island early Thursday, Turkiye’s disaster management agency reported.

The quake took place at 00:03 a.m. local time (2103 GMT) about 136 kilometers (84.5 miles) off Turkiye’s Antalya province, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

It occurred at a depth of 13.20 kilometers (8.20 miles) below the surface, it added.

The quake was particularly felt on Cyprus island and in Turkiye’s Antalya, Mugla, Mersin, Hatay and Adana provinces.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.
