ANKARA (AA) - A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand’s eastern coast Tuesday at 12.58 p.m. local time.

The earthquake struck 25 kilometers south of Gisborne city at a depth of 29 kilometers, according to the national geological hazard monitoring site GeoNet.

The earthquake had no ties with yesterday’s volcanic eruption on White Island (Whakaari) and there is no tsunami risk, the statement said.

There have been no reports of loss of life or property.

The Whakaari volcano erupted Monday, killing at least five people and injuring around 20. Eight others are still missing. The volcano last erupted in 2001.
