ANKARA (AA) — Malaysia’s government is considering introducing a two-term limit for the post of prime minister, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Monday, adding that legislation would be proposed in the upcoming parliamentary session.
Anwar said the government plans to table a bill that would cap the prime minister’s tenure at a maximum of two five-year terms, or 10 years, according to Free Malaysia Today.
“Everyone has a term limit. (Even) the chief secretary to the government cannot serve for 10 years,” he said, adding that leaders should be given sufficient time to implement policies before handing over responsibilities to the next generation.
Anwar, who also serves as finance minister, said the proposal aims to ensure orderly leadership succession and prevent the concentration of power.
The 78-year-old leader was elected prime minister in November 2022 and is currently serving his first term, which under Malaysia’s political system can last up to five years unless Parliament is dissolved earlier.
