ISTANBUL (AA) - A 61-year-old man has died in New York after being pulled into an MRI machine while wearing a heavy metal chain, according to police.
The accident took place Wednesday at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, Long Island, The Washington Times reported Saturday.
A statement from the Nassau County Police Department said the man entered an unauthorized area at approximately 4.34 pm (2034GMT) while an MRI scan was in progress.
The powerful magnetic force of the machine drew him in due to the large chain around his neck, leading to a serious medical emergency.
He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but died from his injuries the following day. Authorities have not publicly released his name.
His wife, Adrienne Jones-McAllister, identified the victim as Keith McAllister, telling a television station that he entered the MRI room to assist her after she had undergone a scan on her knee.
“He went limp in my arms, and this is still pulsating in my brain,” she said, describing how he collapsed after the accident. She also said her husband suffered multiple heart attacks.
Ms. Jones-McAllister said the 20-pound weight-training chain her husband wore had been seen by staff on a previous visit.
“That was not the first time that [the technician] has seen that chain. They had a conversation about it before,” she said.
Nassau Open MRI had not responded to requests for comment as of Friday. The accident remains under investigation.
