Massive Italian walkway lets people 'walk on water'

The 3-km walkway, the latest creation by environmental artist Christo, floats using cubes on Lombardy's Lake Iseo

ROME (AA) - A 3-kilometer walkway that lets people virtually “walk on water” using floating cubes has opened on Italy's Lake Iseo, the latest project by famed “environmental artist” Christo Vladimirov Javacheff.

Some 200,000 floating cubes were placed on the lake to make the runway connecting the village of Sulzano in the northern Lombardy region to the small island of Monte Isola for a 16-day outdoor installation which opened this weekend.

Besides the 81-year-old Bulgarian-born artist, also attending the walkway’s grand opening were Maria Elena Boschi, Italy’s minister of constitutional reforms and relations with Parliament, and Roberto Maroni, president of the Lombardy region, and other officials.

The runway will be open to the public until July 4.
