QUERETARO, Mexico (AA) - A famous Mexican property developer was arrested in the U.S. for possible manslaughter of his son.
Javier Burillo Azcarraga, who is known for developing luxury resorts in Mexico, was arrested Sunday in the state of California after a boating accident killed his 11-year-old son.
Tiburon Police Chief Michael Cronin said a wave made the boy and his older brother fall overboard, and they were then allegedly hit by the boat Burillo Azcarraga was driving. The older boy was injured.
Cronin said Tiburon officers arrested him after he failed an alcohol test.
“The community is shocked. And it’s a traumatic event not only for [the] individuals, but for the community,” Cronin said at a news conference.
The family was in the San Francisco Bay when the incident occurred.
Burillo Azcarraga paid a $1 million bail bond Monday and is charged with suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, willful harm or injury of a child, and driving a boat under the influence, according to Cronin.
Burillo Azcarraga is a member of one of Mexico’s high-profile, influential families. The Azcarraga family founded Televisa, a mass media company that dominates the entertainment and news industry in Mexico.
