ISTANBUL (AA) - Myanmar’s military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party has won a majority of seats in the country’s Union Parliament, according to official election figures.

Based on the latest results released by the Union Election Commission, the party won 231 seats in the Pyithu Hluttaw, the lower house, and 108 seats in the Amyotha Hluttaw, the upper house, giving it a total of 339 seats, China’s Xinhua news agency reported Thursday.

A total of 420 elective seats were contested nationwide in the general election.

Myanmar has a bicameral legislature with 664 seats, including 440 in the lower house and 224 in the upper house.

The elections were held in three phases between Dec. 28 and Jan. 25.

Earlier this month, Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Htun, head of the junta’s information team, said a new parliament would convene in March following the completion of the polls, with a new government expected to take office in April.

Myanmar’s previous elected government, led by Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy, was removed in a 2021 military coup, plunging the country into more than four years of emergency rule.

The three-phase polls marked the first general election held since the coup.
