WASHINGTON (AA) - Multiple people were injured Monday after a gunman opened fire in a Reno, Nevada, casino, according to law enforcement and public officials.
Police responded to reports of an active shooter at roughly 7:25 a.m. (1425 GMT), and located the suspect within four minutes of arriving on the scene. An officer then opened fire on the suspect, Chief Kathryn Nance told reporters.
Most of the shooting took place near a valet area, according to police.
The suspect, identified as an adult male, was transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities located "several" victims who had been shot and other injured parties, and provided medical assistance. The exact number of the injured, as well as their conditions, was not immediately available.
A motive has yet to be determined, Nance said.
Reno City Council Devon Reese said on social media that "lives have been lost this morning in Reno in yet another act of senseless gun violence."
"My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation. We cannot accept this as normal. Not here. Not anywhere," he said.
