Nearly 1 out of 5 Greeks at risk of falling into poverty: Report

Risk of poverty higher for women, while over 26% of population, or 2.72M citizens at risk of social exclusion, says Greek statistics agency

ATHENS (AA) – Nearly one out of every five Greeks is at risk of falling into poverty, according to a report by the country's statistical authority ELSTAT.

Around 1.95 million out of 10.4 million citizens and over 740,000 out of 4.05 million Greek households are at risk of poverty, said the ELSTAR report released on Monday.

According to the report, the poverty threshold in the country is €5,712 ($6,271) for a one-person household and nearly €12,000 ($13,175) for a household with two adults and two dependent children under the age of 14.

It was noted that the risk of poverty is higher for women (19.4%) than for men (18.2%).

Furthermore, the report drew attention to the fact that over 26% of the population, or approximately 2.72 million citizens, are at risk of social exclusion.
