ISTANBUL (AA) - Nepal’s president is set to dissolve parliament for an interim government setup with former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the prime minister, local media reported on Friday.
The agreement to first dissolve the House of Representatives and then appoint Karki as prime minister follows media reports that Karki refused to assume the post before the dissolution of the parliament.
According to the Himalayan Times, President Ram Chandra Poudel will dissolve parliament of 275 seats, declare state of emergency and name an interim setup up led by Karki.
The parliament’s dissolution is also in line with the demands of Gen Z protesters, presidential press adviser Kiran Pokharel was quoted as saying.
Karki's swearing-in ceremony as the head of the interim government is expected to be held at 9 p.m. local time (1515GMT).
The push for an interim government followed deadly protests since Monday that left at least 51 people dead and hundreds of others injured, and forced the ouster of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s elected administration.
The deceased include three Nepal police personnel, 21 protesters, 18 others, and nine prisoners, according to police.
