Niger: Road accident kills 10, injures 44

Road accidents are common in the West African country

NIAMEY, Niger (AA) - At least 10 people were killed and 44 others injured in a road accident in southern Niger, local media reported on Tuesday.

The accident, caused by a tire blowout took place in the Maradi region on Monday, according to Nigerien Press Agency.

"A serious traffic accident occurred yesterday around 4 p.m. (1500 GMT) on the Gazaoua-Tessaoua axis," it said.

Road accidents are common in the West African country.

In March, another road accident killed five people and wounded 37 others in the Zinder region.

Road accidents in Niger -- usually caused by poor road conditions, old vehicles and over-speeding -- kill an average of 800 people per year, according to the country's Transport Ministry.
