OIC hails Palestine’s assumption of G77 chairmanship

Palestine currently holds non-member observer status at UN, allowing it to vote in General Assembly

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Wednesday welcomed Palestine’s assumption of the chairmanship of the G77 group of nations.

In a statement, the OIC said the move "consolidates [Palestine’s] political and legal status in the international arena and confirms its right to full UN membership”.

The OIC also voiced its support for ongoing efforts by the Palestinian leadership to exercise Palestine’s right to join international organizations and accede to international conventions.

Last October, the UN General Assembly endorsed Palestine’s bid for the G77 chairmanship, with 146 assembly members voting in favor while the U.S., Israel and Australia voted against the motion.

Palestine currently holds non-member observer status at the UN, which allows it to vote on General Assembly draft resolutions and participate in UN organizations.
