TRIPOLI, Libya (AA) - More than 100 migrants were rescued when a boat carrying undocumented African migrants broke down off Libya’s northwestern coast Wednesday, according to a coast guard official.

Capt. Bahhar Asim Tur told Anadolu Agency the boat broke down 12 miles (19 kilometers) off the coast of Abu Kammash, near the Tunisian border.

Among the migrants were women and a child, Tur said.

Ever since the collapse of the central authority in Libya in 2011, the country’s northwestern coast has become a hub for illegal migration to Italy and other countries in Europe.
