KIRKLARELI, Turkey (AA) - At least 34 undocumented migrants and refugees were held in northwestern Kirklareli province on Monday, according to a security official.

The detentions were made during a gendarmerie operation, and they were tipped off that two groups of people were attempting to reach Europe from the illegal routes of Turkey in the Kofcaz and Demirkoy districts of the province, the official said.

Iraqis, Afghans and Syrians were later taken to the provincial migration authority, the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to media.

Turkey has been a main route for refugees trying to cross into Europe, since the beginning of the civil war in Syria.
