GAZA (AA) – Dozens of Palestinians in Gaza staged a demonstration late Monday on behalf of hunger strikers and to urge the Israeli administration to address prison conditions.

The protest was organized by the Islamic Jihad movement and the Muchetul Jerusalem Martyr and Prisoners Association. The protestors prayed for the prisoners and the betterment of their conditions of confinement.

Yasir Yizir, the head of the association, told Anadolu Agency that the goal of protest was to support Palestinian hunger strikers.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club recently announced that eight prisoners had started a hunger strike over prison conditions and Israel’s policy of administrative detention.

An ordinary Palestinian could be held in prison for up to six months due to the policy. The detention period could last five years even without legal grounds.

Fed up with Israel’s illegal practices, Palestinian prisoners occasionally launch hunger strikes in protest and to draw the international community’s attention to their suffering.
