PRZEMYSL, Poland (AA) - As Russia's war on Ukraine continues, a group of people from many countries was seen entering the war zone from Poland on Saturday to fight alongside Ukrainians against Russian forces.

According to several journalists covering the war, a group of foreign fighters from various countries was seen crossing into Ukraine through the Medyka border crossing on the Ukrainian-Polish border.

Neal, who did not give his full name to the media for security reasons, said he came from Scotland to fight Russia as Ukraine is fighting for independence.

He added that he intended to join them in their armed struggle against Russian troops.

In his address to the nation earlier on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that 16,000 foreign volunteer fighters would come to his country to help and that the first caravan was on its way.

On Feb. 27, Zelenskyy made an appeal to the entire world and Ukraine's friends, urging them to defend Ukraine and Europe against the Russian attack.

At least 351 civilians, including 22 children, have been killed and 707 others injured in Ukraine since Russia launched a war in the Eastern European country on Feb. 24, according to UN figures, with the real toll feared to be higher.

More than 1.3 million people have fled Ukraine to neighboring countries, the latest data by the UN refugee agency showed.

The Russian attacks have been met by an outcry from the international community, with the EU, UK, and US implementing a range of economic sanctions against Moscow.
