By Yilmaz Kazandioglu

HAKKARI, Turkey (AA) – One soldier was martyred Wednesday in a PKK attack on a military base in the southeastern Turkish province of Hakkari, according to security sources.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, said PKK terrorists carried out an attack on Kilit Tepe Military Base in the province’s Semdinli district.

The wounded soldier succumbed to his wounds in Yuksekova state hospital, the source added.

An air-backed operation was launched to hunt the terrorists.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU -- resumed its decades-old armed campaign in July last year and has been responsible for the deaths of more than 1,100 security force members and civilians, including women and children.
