Pliskova, Medvedev into Australian Open third round

Pliskova beats Siegemund while Medvedev knocks Martinez out of Australian Open to march to third round

ISTANBUL (AA) - The world no. 2 in tennis Karolina Pliskova and fourth seed Daniil Medvedev reached the Australian Open third round each on Thursday.

Czech athlete Pliskova defeated Germany's Laura Siegemund 2-0 (6,3, 6,3) in the women's second round at Rod Laver Arena.

The fourth seed in women's, Simona Halep from Romania also beat Harriet Dart of the U.K. with the sets of 6-2, 6-4 to be in the next round.

Meanwhile, the sixth seed in women's, Swiss Belinda Bencic saw off Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia 7-5, 7,5 to advance to the third round.

In men's second round, Russian Medvedev eliminated Spanish player Pedro Martinez 3-0 with the sets of 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 at Margaret Court Arena.

The seventh seed Alexander Zverev of Germany toppled Belarusian Egor Gerasimov 7-6, 6-4 and 7-5 to be in the third round.


- World number five Thiem risks chances but survives

The fifth seed in men's, Austria's Dominic Thiem fought hard to beat his Australian opponent Alex Bolt in five sets, lasted for 3 hours and 22 minutes.

Thiem was the winner of the first set by 6-2 but Bolt came back, winning the second and third sets (7-5, 7-6) to lead the match 2-1.

But Thiem didn't give up and displayed a dominant performance (6-1, 6-2) to win the match 3-2 at Melbourne Arena.

The 108th edition of the Australian Open will run from Jan. 20 through Feb. 2.
