NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) - Fourteen prisoners escaped Saturday from the highly guarded Nanyuki Government of Kenya prison in central Kenya.

Special police units that include officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) “were mobilized and immediately rushed to the scene map ref 853583 about 3km (2 miles) west of the station.,” said a police report.

Police told reporters the escapees included murders and those jailed for robbery with violence.

Authorities said they managed to recapture some of the inmates that escaped at around 2 a.m. but six were on the loose as of late evening.

Police said that the inmates used a hacksaw to cut through main doors that separated the prison and perimeter walls.

One police officer was injured from a gunshot in July when eight prisoners broke out of the Vihiga prison in western Kenya.
