Police seize 72,500 drug pills in southern Turkey

Anti-drug squad seizes some 80 pounds of opiate pills hidden in car in Mediterranean Mersin province

MERSIN, Turkey (AA) - Turkish police seized 72,500 opiate pills in an anti-drug bust in the Mediterranean province of Mersin, a security source said on Saturday.

The physical and technical follow-up of the police revealed that the suspects was planning a meeting in the central Mezitli district for drug smuggling, said the source who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Police teams rounded up three suspects who were allegedly aiming to drive drugs on the market.

A sniffer dog helped to seize some 36 kg (around 80 pounds) of opiate pills hidden in a car of suspects.

The suspects' interrogation continues.
