DOHA, Qatar (AA) – Qatar said it is working to reopen its embassy in Bahrain and appoint an ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

On Monday, Qatar and the UAE agreed to restore their diplomatic representation and reopen embassies.

“The next step is to appoint ambassadors,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed bin Mohammed Al-Ansari told a press conference in Doha on Tuesday.

He said officials from Qatar and the UAE have been exchanging visits over the past months.

“The restoration of the diplomatic representation will constitute a positive impetus to the political relations,” he added.

As for Qatar’s relations with Bahrain, the spokesman said efforts were underway “to open the embassies between the two countries, especially after the resumption of flights between them with six flights per day.”

The UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Egypt severed diplomatic relations with Qatar in 2017. But in 2021, the four countries signed a reconciliation agreement with Doha to heal their rift.

In April, Qatar and Bahrain agreed to resume their diplomatic relations.
