LONDON (AA) - Queen Elizabeth II will not attend a traditional annual event next week, amid reports that she is suffering mobility problems.
The event is called Maundy Service, and by tradition takes place ahead of Easter. The monarch hands out money to leading members of the community.
The queen turns 96 later in April.
A palace source told local media that because she was unable to commit to attending and, with the order of service being printed, she did not want to overshadow the event and so confirmed the decision in public in advance.
In her stead, her son and heir Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will attend the service that will take place at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Chapel.
Last October, the queen was hospitalized and was subsequently told to rest by doctors. She has since cut back on engagements.
The queen made a rare public appearance last month when she attended a memorial service for her late husband Prince Philip.
She has, however, continued to carry out her duties virtually, such as meeting foreign ambassadors by video link.
