IDLIB, Syria (AA) – At least 11 people were killed and dozens of others injured on Wednesday by regime airstrikes in Syria’s opposition-held Idlib province, a local civil defense source told Anadolu Agency.

According to the source, who preferred anonymity due to security concerns, regime warplanes targeted the center of province, including a market in Idlib’s town of Ariha, where 11 people were killed and another 28 injured.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011, when the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests -- which erupted as part of that year’s "Arab Spring" uprisings -- with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, more than a quarter of a million people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced across the war-battered country, according to UN figures.
