Revolution Guards 'interfering' in economy: Iran leader

Military’s ‘obsession’ with Iran's economy is distracting it from its responsibilities, President Hassan Rouhani asserts

TEHRAN (AA) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday criticized what he described as “interference” in economic affairs by Iran’s influential Revolutionary Guards Corps (RGC).

In a speech delivered in Tehran to mark Iran's Military Day, Rouhani asserted: "The armed forces' obsession with the country's economy is preventing it from carrying out its lofty responsibilities."

He added: "Unjustified [economic] concerns will distract our leaders and armed forces from carrying out their national duties."

Some critics say the RGC exerts undue influence on Iran’s domestic and external policymaking as a result of its formidable military -- and economic -- clout.

Mohsen Rezaee, a former RGC commander, recently said that administration of Iran’s economy should be turned over to the RGC, citing alleged mismanagement by the country’s civilian authorities.
