ISTANBUL (AA) – Football team Sporting CP on Thursday announced the appointment of Rui Borges as their new head coach following the sacking of Joao Pereira.
"The last few days have been intense days, but have been happy days," Borges said after the signing ceremony.
"I have no words to describe how proud I and my coaching team are to be entrusted with this opportunity. I’m very happy," the Portuguese manager added.
The Portuguese club confirmed that Borges inked a contract until June 2026 with an option to extend it for another year.
Borges, 43, previously managed Portuguese clubs such as Moreirense, Mafra, Vilafranquense, Academica de Viseu, and Mirandela.
Sporting CP on Thursday sacked Pereira after just six weeks over poor results.
The club lost four of their eight games under Pereira and placed second with 37 points, behind Liga Portugal leaders Benfica.
